Moshi sights

Moshi sights

Moshi Sights Myself, Rose (New Zealand), Matthew (New Jersey), Antonia (UK), and four others from the homestay decided to go to Moshi for the weekend.  Moshi is the town at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, about 90 km away from Arusha.  Our weekend was spent as follows: Coffee Plantation Our first stop was at a coffee plantation.  Coffee is a significant aspect of Tanzania’s economy and it is its largest export.  I had expected to see rows upon rows of coffee plants, but instead, the plants were scattered among the…

Volunteering in Arusha – The first week

Volunteering in Arusha – The first week

Volunteering in Arusha – the first week Sorry for the delay, but things have been hectic this past week in Arusha.  To get there from Cairo, I had a 5 hour layover in Doha, Qatar (probably the best airport in the world), and then traveled overland via Nairobi, to arrive at my home for the next month. I’m volunteering with an organization called Tanzania Volunteer Experience or “TVE” which offers a variety of volunteering opportunities from working with women with HIV, childcare/orphanages, or helping out at schools.  While there, I’m…

Cairo Sights

Cairo Sights

Cairo Sights Best food: falafel and shwarma (both beef and chicken).  I cannot get enough of both of them.  It helps that they are ridiculously cheap, only 1 EGP per falafel (about 15 cents). Best sight: Hands down the pyramids, even in spite of the numerous touts. Best way to get around the city:…

Pyramids of Giza

Pyramids of Giza

Pyramids of Giza Thought I’d try to catch up on a few things since Cairo has been chaotic so far.  My journey began with a flight from Detroit to Frankfurt, Germany, where I was able to finally watch Jurassic World (great movie), as well as an independent film titled Dope, which also opened up this year, and which I highly recommend.  Upon arriving to the Frankfort airport, I was able to sprawl across a few airport seats and catch a couple hours of shut eye before my flight to Cairo….

Around the world trip – Preparing to Leave

Around the world trip – Preparing to Leave

Around the world trip Hello everyone, I’ve decided to (try to) keep a blog in order to keep friends and family an up-to-date account on my travels and adventures. I’m about to embark (tomorrow!) on a trip through East Africa and India and perhaps other pit stops along the way.  My one way flight to Cairo, Egypt leaves tomorrow at 3:50 pm, where I will have 3 days to see the pyramids and other sites before continuing on to Arusha, Tanzania where I will volunteer for the next month.  Even…
